Catalina Goat Hunting Information
Catalina goats originally hail from Spain. They are wild animals that thrive in mountainous regions in Hawaii, New Zealand, Ireland, and Australia. They are essentially feral goats that continue to thrive in the wild. These goats range in size from 130 pounds for smaller females to 275 pounds for the larger males. Used often for conservation grazing, domesticated herds exist across the globe. Here at Cotton Mesa Trophy Whitetail Ranch, our herds are wild, roaming from craggy cliff to craggy cliff. They have adjusted well to our Texas terrain and our large population of Catalina goats offers an invigorating and challenging hunt.
What to Expect at a Catalina Goat Hunt in Texas
The key to a successful hunt is understanding the behavior of Catalina goats. Catalina goats are incredibly agile climbers and prefer rocky outcroppings and cliffs, so your hunt is bound to be an exciting one as you navigate this challenging hunting environment. These animals are quite social, so they will form small groups. Our experienced guides know the typical areas our Catalina goats congregate, so scouting the herd is done prior to taking you out on the hunt. Simply hop on one of our 4-wheel ATVs to get in close to the herd. We may hunt from the ATVs safari-style or we may take you to a blind. Catalina goats are incredibly wary and getting them in your sights may take a bit, so a comfortable blind may be our best bet, depending on the herd’s location, wind direction, and so forth. Our 4×5 and 5×5 Atascosa blinds offer supreme comfort, shielding you from the unpredictable Texas weather. There are several methods that can successfully bag a trophy male Catalina goat. Here at the ranch, if we’re able to get up close, you can bow hunt Catalina goats, or if conditions don’t allow us to get near the herd, you can always go for the more traditional rifle shot.
